Introduction- edited version

Stereotype is a common belief of statements regarding a specific social group or individual. It also means giving concept of standardized assumption to a specific group and type of individuals. Stereotypes occur in different forms and are based on various backgrounds such as, gender, race, socioeconomic and so on.

In today’s world, male stereotypes are seen in most in media types. Advertisements are creating a false impression on the portrayal of men towards today’s youth. Youth are under the false impression that they must look a certain way as portrayed in advertisements in order to be accepted by the public. A common misconception of men that is seen in most media especially movies is, they are the breadwinner of the house or father figure, and therefore are in charge of the household, where they must act decisively and strictly, while women are supporting them at the back. This stereotype reinforces the assumption that men and boys should always be in control, and being emotional is a sign of weakness.

The importance of the research on male stereotypes is to gain a deeper understanding on the perceptions of youths towards an ideal male image. A good example that is most often portrayed in the media, are men as superheroes that fight evil and protect the innocent. It is a common perception among the opposite gender to assume that a male hero will come and sweep them off their feet. The question is do boys think of themselves as superheroes too?

The objective of this research is to throw light on the male stereotyping that are affecting youths and help to demystify such beliefs. Many questions are raised in this research, such as how youths perceive male stereotypes? How much are youths influenced by them? Why do youths approach such media representation of men?

By using multimedia technology such as the internet, we hope to seek out the root of the male stereotyping obsession in the media that are influencing youth’s today.
