First and foremost, it is necessary to say that the methodology we used in this particular survey helped us a lot in analyzing the most relevant group of people in the society who has a higher rate of exposure to different media forms. The survey conducted through the internet enabled us to get to know of their opinions on how male stereotypes appear in magazines affect their lives directly and indirectly.
We were glad that we got more results than we expected within the first week of the survey. Even though the data collected was more than what's required, it gave us an overall understanding of media representations and their levels of impact on the audience comprises of people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
While 63% of the youths agreed to the fact that advertising content had a direct influence on their lives, 37% disagreed. Does it mean that they were aware of such media content and ignored them? OR they do not possibly know whether they are already influenced? Psychology in advertising has long been used as an effective means to sell products or services. The elements that are being used in an advertisement is compiled with a proper understanding of underlying concepts that affect human psychology. Therefore, the message is meant to be accepted by the audience without any hesitation. This factor can be one of the reasons for the above mentioned 37% of the youths to believe that they are not influenced by any means of advertising.
As for the portrayal of Men in advertisements, 53% of youths disagreed stating that media outlets often offers a false portrayal of men in real life. Slightly more than half of the people participated in the survey seem to be aware of the inaccuracy in such content, but what appears so hard to overlook is the second highest percentage of neutral response, which goes up to 41%. The neutral response is neither an agreement nor a disagreement. They believe that some media content is accurate in portraying men as it is, where as some gives a false image. What is essential here is to understand how to differentiate between right and wrong. Hence, cultural and social literacy plays a major role in this aspect.
